The 12-Month Indian Wedding Planning Timeline

Indian weddings involve several functions, two families and a long list of vendors. Working backwards from the date keeps the planning calm. Use this timeline as a starting point and adjust it for a shorter engagement.

12–10 months before

  • Agree on a total budget and who contributes what. Write it down.
  • Shortlist dates with family elders and your pandit or priest, then check venue availability for two or three options.
  • Draft a rough guest count for each function. Venue size, catering and budget all depend on it.
  • Book the venue. Popular venues in peak season (October–February) fill up first.

9–7 months before

  • Book photographers and videographers. Ask to see a complete wedding gallery, not just highlights.
  • Hire a planner or decide who in the family coordinates each function.
  • Book the decorator and caterer if the venue allows outside vendors.
  • Start bridal and groom outfit shopping; made-to-order pieces can take 10–16 weeks.

6–4 months before

  • Book makeup, mehndi, DJ, choreographer and transport.
  • Block hotel rooms for outstation guests.
  • Create your wedding website and collect RSVPs for each function.
  • Finalise the invitation design and print quantity.

3–1 months before

  • Send invitations (8–10 weeks ahead for destination weddings, 4–6 weeks otherwise).
  • Do makeup and hair trials; finish outfit fittings and alterations.
  • Confirm menus, decor layouts and the function-wise schedule with every vendor in writing.
  • Chase pending RSVPs and finalise seating and room allocation.

The final week

  • Share a single run-sheet with times, contacts and locations with every vendor and the family coordinators.
  • Prepare envelopes for vendor balance payments.
  • Keep an emergency kit: safety pins, medicines, chargers, snacks and copies of contracts.

Our free wedding checklist loads these tasks automatically and lets you add your own with due dates and reminders.
